If golf fans are upset that the best players in the world don’t play in the same events like this week’s Players Championship, world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler said they should direct their anger at the camps that have divided golf. “If the fans are upset, look at these guys that left,” Scheffler said Tuesday. “We toured and we were all together, and those guys that left are not here anymore. After all, that’s where the split came from.

“As far as our tour is concerned, as I said, we’re doing everything we can to create the best possible production for our fans, and that’s really what we’ve accomplished.”
Scheffler will be looking to defend his title at the 50th Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass, but current Masters champion Jon Rahm and former champions such as Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, Cameron Smith and Bryson DeChambeau will not be competing while playing in the tournament. Rivals. LIV Golf League. The PGA Tour’s flagship event, known as the “fifth major,” no longer enjoys the same level of competition as in the past.
“If players want to take their money and leave, that’s their decision,” Scheffler said. “I’m not going to sit here and tell people not to take hundreds of millions of dollars. If that’s what they think is best for their lives, then go for it. I’m not going to sit here and force guys to stay on our tour.
“But at the end of the day, this is where I want to be, and we’re continuing to grow what we’re doing, and what they’re doing is not really a concern to me.”
Earlier Tuesday, during his first news conference since the Tour Championship in Atlanta in August, PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan said the circuit’s negotiations with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund had “accelerated.”
The sides are discussing a potential $3 billion investment from the sovereign wealth fund, which has financed LIV Golf the past three years. Monahan and his partners in Strategic Sports Group, a consortium of billionaire sports team owners who have already announced they will invest up to $3 billion in the PGA Tour, met with PIF Governor Yasser Al-Rumayyan in Saudi Arabia in January.
Monahan said the Tour understands that fans are “tired of hearing about the conflict and the money and who’s going to get what.”
One of the next steps in this potential deal would be for Al-Rumayyan to meet with the PGA Tour’s player directors on the policy council, which includes Tiger Woods and Jordan Spieth. The players’ directors also serve on the board of directors of PGA Tour Enterprises, the for-profit entity created by the tour and SSG.
“I think it’s really important that we all row in the same direction,” said Patrick Cantlay, one of the players’ directors. “I think with this board of PGA Tour Enterprises, I think it’s really great that we have a chance to start something new and move forward together in the right direction.”
At Monahan’s press conference, a reporter asked him if he felt he had the full support of the board as he worked to move the Saudi deal forward. Monahan acknowledged that there had been “a lot of interesting and lively debate within our board” about his future as commissioner. “As you know, this is a question you need to ask the player,” said Monahan. “I can’t generalize the player, but my two advice clearly given me the responsibilities given to me. I’m supported by the Board of Directors, and I will move on to us. A suitable person. I know that. I believe that with all my heart and I am determined to do just that.”
Xander Schauffele, the sixth-ranked golfer in the world, said he remains skeptical that Monahan is the right person to lead the tour. Shaaufele has been sought to resign in Monahan in the past.
“Because trust is quite gentle, words are words, and in my book he says he’s on a long way,” said Shaaufele. “The Players’ Association has made some decisions with him so I’m sure he has the support of the (players) board, but I personally think he still has a long way to go.”
